CLAT UG 2025 Syllabus: An Overview
The CLAT 2025 Syllabus consists of 5 subjects that are divided into 5 sections of the paper. These five subjects are English Language, Current Affairs including General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Techniques.
Each subject has its own favorite areas of asking questions and is designed to evaluate the comprehensive, logical, analytical, and reasoning skills of an aspirant.
Through the last 4-5 years, I have noticed that the difficulty level of the CLAT UG 2025 exam has been moving up and down and even the subjects vary in their difficulty level.
But what is common in all five subjects is that they are all Passage based questions, unlike the older pattern of the CLAT exam which asked direct Multiple-choice Choice Questions.
This means that in every subject, almost every 5 questions are accompanied by a related paragraph of approximately 450-500 words and thus the reading portion takes a big share in the CLAT UG 2025 Syllabus.
The exam consists of 120 passage-based MCQs that need to be completed in 2 hours (120 minutes). So be mindful here, that this exam becomes challenging when we get only 1 minute for each question.
CLAT 2025 Syllabus: Subject-Wise Breakdown and Details

CLAT UG 2025 Syllabus for Current Affairs and General Knowledge
This is perhaps one of the toughest subjects of the CLAT UG 2025 Syllabus as the students find it difficult to cover current affairs on a daily basis to make sure that they are fully prepared for the subject.
But it can be tackled if we understand clearly what the CLAT exam asks in this subject.
The Current Affairs and General Knowledge section is designed to test a candidate’s awareness of national and international events. This section includes topics such as:
- Current Events: National and international importance
- General Knowledge: History, geography, general science
- Awards and Honors: Recent awards and recognitions for example the recent Paris Olympics are very important
- Government Policies: Major policies and schemes
Here is a pro tip for you!
Many a time, student waste a lot of their time in learning the topics from static GK that are random and not relevant to the CLAT exam. But if we closely observe the Previous Year Papers, we see that the CLAT exam is more interested in asking static questions only from the topics that were quite into the current news.
Thus, all you need to do is to cover the static GK of the topics that are of utmost importance from the current affairs section.
For example, in the CLAT UG 2024 exam, a passage from the G20 Summit was covered in the Current Affairs section which was a lot in the current news in 2023. And one of the questions from this passage was – “Which one of the following countries is not a member of the G20?”
Now, this is something that is a static GK part of the G20 News.
So just follow this trick, and you are going to be just fine!
Topic | Subtopics |
---|---|
Current Events | Major national and international events, sports news |
General Knowledge | Historical events, geographical facts, scientific discoveries |
Awards and Honors | Nobel Prizes, sports awards, literary awards |
Government Policies | Major schemes, economic policies, international agreements |
CLAT Current Affairs Syllabus: Weightage in Exam
Now, since you know how wide this subject is, I can say that you might be planning to find an alternative to current affairs and even thinking of skipping this portion.
But, let me tell you…..
If by any chance you are planning to skip this subject or just not take it very seriously, just know that about 25% of the CLAT UG 2025 exam is made up of current affairs and GK.
So, out of 120 questions, you can expect about 28-32 questions from this subject making it a significant portion of the test.
Pro Tip For Current Affairs:
Don’t skip it, just sip it!
Daily!
CLAT Current Affairs: Preparation Strategy
Current Affairs and GK is the most strategic portion of the CLAT UG 2025 Syllabus as it needs to be read and learned every single day, little by little.
So, start with selecting your most comfortable and reliable resources like newspapers, news blogs, etc., and get started.
These tips can help you:💡
- Stay Updated: Regularly read newspapers and follow credible news portals.
- Notes Making: Maintain a diary to jot down important events and facts. (always make topic-wise notes and not date-wise for easy revision)
- Revise Regularly: Periodically review your notes to reinforce your memory. (A weekly revision is quite good)
- Practice Quizzes: Participate in online quizzes and mock tests to assess your preparation. (Ask your friend or fellow aspirant to quiz you)
CLAT Current Affairs: Important Resources and Books
I am telling you this with my experience that the lesser your resources, the better your prep.
So make sure you choose the most appropriate resources for your current affairs prep and then stick to them.
Revise them repeatedly for better accuracy and memory during the exam.
Here are a few suggestive resources:
– Books for Static GK: Lucent’s for General Knowledge
– Newspapers for daily current affairs: Either “The Hindu” or “The Indian Express” can be chosen as per your comfort
– Monthly magazines: A good monthly magazine can help you get an overview of all the important news in a month (you can download the pdf, take a printout, and make it your own notebook for current affairs)
CLAT UG 2025 Syllabus for Logical Reasoning
Honestly speaking, the most confusing part of the CLAT UG 2025 Syllabus is the Logical Reasoning section.
The reason is that, unlike other exams like AILET, where the logical reasoning subject covers questions like blood relations, syllogisms, seating arrangement, etc. The CLAT exam syllabus for logical reasoning is quite different.
As per my analysis of the previous years’ papers, this portion of the syllabus of the CLAT exam is more like Critical Reasoning or rather an extension of the reading comprehension portion.
This subject assesses a candidate’s ability to identify patterns, and logical links, and rectify illogical arguments.
Thus, if you want to ace the subject of logical reasoning in the CLAT 2025 syllabus, make sure that you are working on your reading skills and also your analytical mindset to critically analyze a passage given.
CLAT Logical Reasoning Syllabus: Tabular Analysis
Even though as we discussed the logical reasoning in the CLAT exam is more on the lines of critical reasoning, it is wise to generally cover the most basic topics of logical reasoning.
You may get an idea from the following table:
Topic | Subtopics |
---|---|
Logical Sequences | Series completion, pattern recognition |
Analogies | Identifying relationships |
Critical Reasoning | Argument analysis, inference |
Syllogisms | Deductive reasoning, logical deduction |
CLAT Logical Reasoning Syllabus: Weightage in Exam
When it comes to the weightage of the Logical Reasoning section, it comprises of about 20% of the entire CLAT UG exam.
So approximately, 22-26 questions are asked from this subject making it a crucial part of the CLAT UG exam.
CLAT Logical Reasoning: Preparation Strategy
Now, because the method of questioning in logical reasoning is a bit different in CLAT, the strategy to prepare for the same is also unique.
Consider these tips:💡
- Understand the exam requirement: Solve the previous years’ questions to begin with and understand the CLAT Syllabus for logical reasoning
- Practice Daily: Read daily editorials in newspapers and analyze them critically and logically and also practice at least one logical reasoning question daily.
- Understand Concepts: Focus on understanding the underlying principles.
- Take Mock Tests: Regularly attempt mock tests to identify strengths and weaknesses.
- Analyze Performance: Review incorrect answers and learn from mistakes.
CLAT Logical Reasoning: Important Resources and Books
Logical reasoning in the CLAT UG Syllabus is one subject that needs more practice to get aligned with the mindset of the examiner. For this some books can help you prepare your basic understanding and rest is on your practice.
- Books:
- “A Modern Approach to Logical Reasoning” by R.S. Aggarwal
- “Analytical Reasoning” by M.K. Pandey
- “GMAT Critical Reasoning Bible” by David N. Kiloran
2. Online Resources: CLAT preparation websites, online quizzes, and reasoning apps

CLAT exam syllabus gives some relief to the aspirants by adding the subject of the English language. If practiced well, it can be easy and scoring at the same time.
The English Language section evaluates comprehension skills, grammar, and vocabulary.

CLAT UG 2025 Syllabus for Legal Reasoning
Now here comes my favorite subject of the CLAT UG Syllabus which is legal reasoning. See, of course, I am a law graduate and have studied law for years now, but this subject is at times the most difficult for most of the aspirants.
But why would that be?
It’s simple!
Legal studies and reasoning are not very widely taught in the school curriculum and thus a student ends up in a fix as to where to begin from and what to read.
But, we should be mindful here that the CLAT Syllabus mentions “Legal Reasoning” and not “Law” as a subject. This means that the CLAT exam only wants to see and analyze your logical temperament to apply the principles of law and their application.
They do not expect you to be the masters of law.
So calm down and believe me when I say that you can tackle this portion of the CLAT UG Syllabus.
Legal Reasoning includes:
- Principles of Law: Legal principles and their application
- Facts and Scenarios: Analyzing given situations and applying relevant laws
- Legal Terms: Understanding and using legal terminology
- Current Legal Developments: Latest and important judgments, legal news, etc.
CLAT Legal Reasoning Syllabus: Tabular Analysis
Topic | Subtopics |
---|---|
Principles of Law | Legal maxims, fundamental principles |
Facts and Scenarios | Case studies, application of laws |
Legal Terms | Definitions, usage in context |
Legal Current News and Events | Latest judgments of the courts and legal developments |
CLAT Legal Reasoning Syllabus: Weightage in Exam
This is the time when you will know why I emphasize so much on this subject in the CLAT Syllabus.
The answer is clear from the exam pattern and PYQs.
Legal Reasoning makes up about 25% of the entire CLAT UG exam syllabus which would be about 28-32 questions out of 120 questions.
So, it would be right to say that Legal Reasoning is a significant part of the exam, and it can significantly reflect on your rank and marks.
So make sure you devote a bigger piece of your heart and hard work to this subject.
But the real question is….
How?
What would be the best way to prepare for the subject of legal reasoning?
CLAT Legal Reasoning: Preparation Strategy
As you already know by now, the CLAT Exam is not really interested to know whether or not you know about law. It wants to know if you can understand the reason or logic behind a law and that you can apply a law in a given situation.
But, how did I get to know about this?
Let me tell you all about an ‘open secret’!
I have a magical resource known as ‘Past Years’ Papers’!
So when you start preparing for legal reasoning, make sure to become best friends with the PYQs as they will guide you in and out about what and how you need to prepare.
Consider these tips:💡
- Understand Concepts: Focus on understanding legal principles and their applications. (My live classes are just the right place)
- Case Studies: Practice analyzing case studies to improve legal reasoning skills.
- Legal terms and legal maxims: Learn and understand commonly used legal maxims. (They save crucial time during the exam)
- Mock Tests: Regularly take mock tests to assess your preparation.
CLAT Legal Reasoning: Important Resources and Books
There are some books that I consider quite dependable for legal reasoning preparation.
- Books: “Legal Aptitude for CLAT and Other Law Entrance Examinations” by A.P. Bhardwaj (very crisp and to the point; I also personally read it)
- Online Resources: Legal education websites, case study resources (but always read in alignment with the current legal events)
- Legal Current Affairs and latest judgments: Keep a close eye on the latest legal news, developments, bills, and judgments of the Supreme Court (there are PYQs from the latest judgments, for example- Question XIV in CLAT 2024 paper)
CLAT 2025 Syllabus for Quantitative Aptitude
When I look at the Quantitative Aptitude subject of the CLAT UG Syllabus, there is one very commonly used phrase that comes to my mind, that is, ‘At last but not the least’…
Through these years, I have had interaction with many CLAT toppers and most of them had this to say that ignoring quants was their biggest mistake.
A big mistake!
So much so that it cost them a whole attempt!
And that is the reason why I want to tell you all that no matter what any so-called expert may tell you to work hard in the other four subjects and make up for quants, please close your ears and avoid such drowning-worthy advice.
The reason for this will be unfolded in the upcoming weightage segment.
Let’s quickly understand what the CLAT syllabus includes in this subject.
In the most relevant terms, It assesses a candidate’s mathematical ability and data interpretation skills.
It covers:
- Arithmetic: Basic operations, percentages, ratios (most important)
- Algebra: Equations, inequalities
- Geometry and Mensuration: Shapes, areas, volumes
- Data Interpretation:** Charts, graphs, tables
CLAT Quantitative Aptitude Syllabus: Tabular Analysis
Topic | Subtopics |
---|---|
Arithmetic | Percentages, ratios, averages |
Algebra | Equations, inequalities |
Geometry | Angles, areas, volumes |
Data Interpretation | Bar graphs, pie charts, tables |
CLAT Quantitative Aptitude Syllabus: Weightage in Exam
This subject constitutes the smallest portion of the CLAT UG Syllabus taking the credit for only 10% of the entire paper. This generally comprises 10-12 questions out of 120 questions.
Perhaps, this small weightage is the reason why many aspirants make the mistake of ignoring this subject.
But mark my words, these few marks actually make or break your rank and also chance to study in your dream NLU
So, what should be done?
How can we prepare for this subject while also making sure that we do not end up wasting our time and feeling demotivated?
CLAT Quantitative Aptitude: Preparation Strategy
To begin, we just need to change our perspective on this subject.
So, instead of just looking at it like a subject that is so small that it would not reap any real benefits in the exam, start looking at it like a subject that is ‘so small’ and thus if you just get done with it, you can get a real jump in your CLAT score!
Don’t you think it will work?
It will!
Try it!
Consider these tips:💡
- Strengthen Basics: Ensure a strong understanding of basic mathematical concepts.
- Practice Regularly: Solve various types of quantitative problems daily.
- Mock Tests: Take regular mock tests to gauge your preparation.
- Data Interpretation: Focus on practicing data interpretation problems.
CLAT 2025 Marking Scheme
The CLAT exam follows a very simple marking scheme. And be mindful of the fact that it has negative markings as well.
Once we have understood the syllabus and the weightage of all the subjects in the CLAT Exam, let’s now understand the marking scheme of the exam.
The marking scheme for the CLAT UG 2025 exam is straightforward yet critical for strategic preparation.
The entire paper consists of 120 questions which make a total of 120 marks.
Thus, for every correct answer, you will get +1 mark, and for every wrong answer, a -0.25 mark will be deducted.
We can surely say that this negative marking makes accuracy crucial, as guessing can lead to a loss of marks. So yes, the CLAT Exam 2025 has negative marking making it a tougher examination as against exams like SLAT that do not have any negative marking.
CLAT EXAM FAQ
Now before I conclude this blog.
